The second card from my photomanipulation Tarot deck.
The Lovers card symbolizes growth, emotion, and the occasional need to give in to the powers that push and pull us throughout our lives. This is a complicated card; on one hand, it can represent positive movement towards love and commitment - on the other hand, it can represent the negative effects of becoming tangled in lust and passion.
This took freaking forever to do. As you can imagine, it is rather difficult to make two women grow out of a tree...especially a tree with no leaves whatsoever (and no apples, for that matter).
The traditional Rider Waite tarot deck displays the Lovers as Adam & Eve figures in a garden of Eden, with a great leaf covered figure embracing them from above. My original intent was to mimic the male/female dichotomy of the card, but morph their bodies into a tree rather than have them sheltered by one. Consequently, I couldn't find ANY good stock photos of nude men; thus, my lovers became lesbians. I think this works, particularly because women have historically been portrayed as being intune with nature, as opposed to men who have historically been portrayed as masters of nature.
Tons of hours in this, but I'm finally happy with it.
Completed entirely within Photoshop 7.
